About Our Cottage
West View Cottage, which dates back to the 17th century, is built in the traditional Yorkshire Long House style of cruck construction with thatched roof. It is a 'listed building' and features in 'Houses of the North Yorkshire Moors'.
Starting as a small croft for a farm worker and his family, the cottage has evolved over the centuries. The original part was built with whatever materials were available locally; limestone, oak and straw. A byre was added for housing the animals during winter, perhaps a cow for milking, or a pig or two.
A cross passage was included as a means of separating the byre from the living accommodation. Later lofted floors were added which were accessed via ladders. Finally, some 150 years ago, a 'barn' with tiled roof was attached to the cottage. Within the barn were separate Carpenters workshop and a Blacksmiths forge. These were for artisans who made and repaired farm carts and other agricultural equipment of the time. The very last bay of the barn is still set out as a byre complete with its mangers, but alas no cows.
Over the last 40 years parts of the barn have been converted into living accommodation and it is within this area that our 'Garden' bedroom accommodation is offered. Breakfast is served within original part of the cottage.
