West View Cottage, dating back to the 17th century, is built in the traditional Yorkshire Long House style of cruck construction with thatched roof. It is a ‘listed building’ and features in ‘Houses of the North Yorkshire Moors’.

Starting as a small croft for a farm worker, the cottage has evolved over the centuries.  Initialy a byre was added to the house for the crofters animals in the winter months; perhaps a cow for milking, or pigs.  A cross passage, where wheat would be threshed at its entrance, seperates the byre from the living accomodation.  Later lofted floors were added over the ground floor area with acces via ladders.  Finally, some 150 years ago, a barn was built which was attached to the cottage.

Over the last 40 years parts of the barn have been converted into living accomodation and it is within the barn that our bedroom accomodation is offered.   Breakfast is served within original part of the cottage.
